Diarrhea Medications
• Kaopectate. Take 2 to 4 tablespoons (25 to 50 mL) after each loose bowel movement.
• Lomotil. One to two tablets every four hours as needed. You can take Lomotil with Kaopectate or Imodium.
Maximum eight Lomotil tablets per day.
• Imodium. Two capsules initially, then one to two capsules every two to four hours. Maximum 16 capsules
per day.
• Paregoric. Take 1 tsp. (5 mL) four times a day. It may be used with Lomotil.
• Cholestryamine. A bile-salt sequestering agent. One packet after each meal and at bedtime.
• Donnatal or Robinul. Anticholinergic, antispasmodic agents for bowel cramping. One to two tablets every
four hours as needed.
• When all else fails, try Metamucil plus Kaopectate.
